MAC Ruby Woo vs Tony Moly Ruby Red

November 28, 2016 Amanda Koker Dupe Reviews 0

Hi Ladies and Jellyspoons

I have another red lipstick dupe review for you. I tend to be gravitating a lot towards red lipsticks these days. I guess it’s because red is a classic staple you can wear all year round, to all occasions and it’s versatile enough for all skin colours. They say: "When in doubt, wear red."

With this is mind I wanted to find a cheap dupe for MAC's Ruby Woo lipstick. Tony Moly has a sale and their sales are amazing because they go on for 2 months straight, or maybe they just have one every month. I know that they have amazing matte lipsticks and in every shade of red imaginable, so I was certain I’d find a dupe. So I took Mac Ruby Woo with me, made some swatches and found this amazing lipstick in one of my favourite Tony Moly lines. Kiss Lover Style is a line of predominantly red and pink matte lipsticks. They come in sleek black metal containers that aren’t chunky, yet not as thin as a lip crayon either.

The Tony Moly Kiss Lover Style lippie that I found is called RD01 Ruby Red (루비레드).

Here is Tony Moly Ruby Red next to MAC Ruby Woo in the packaging:

Here they are swatched on my hand (Top: MAC Ruby Woo, Bottom: Tony Moly Ruby Red).

Ruby Woo is by far one of MAC’s best selling lipsticks, if not THE best seller. It is popular for its Retro Matte formula, and for being the absolute classic pinup red. For me personally Ruby Woo can be drying and definitely needs either a liner or a primer. I use MAC Cherry lipliner as a foundational layer before applying any red lipstick, although MAC has a lip liner called Ruby Woo specifically for this purpose, which would definitely be a closer match in colour.

Here are the lip swatches:

As you can tell in the images, Ruby Woo is drier and looks more matte than Ruby Red, but with a lip primer, that will not be a problem at all. I’ve honestly struggled to find something this close to Ruby Woo, but I am very happy with this find. I’d give Ruby Red 5 stars in dupibility to Ruby Woo.

Isn’t it great that we don’t have to spend $28 on a MAC lipstick with so many great Korean brands with the same quality and for only a fraction of the price? I don’t know about you, but it makes me happy!

Lots of love
Amanda
